Devlog - 3
Back for Devlog 3 !
Hi there ! It seems no time has passed since the last devlog, but in reality it has been almost one or two month.
So, there is a lot to show :)
General Information
So like last time here is an overview of what we'll see here :
- Level design
- Monster changes
- Game feel and Audio
- First Game loop
- Last Game loop
- Trailer
Level Design
What is more important than a level in a game built around its controller ? We made some iterations and ended up with this :
As you can see, we used archs, ropes, wooden rod and stone pillars to populate the level and provide the player with a valid playground to move around.
Monster Changes
Lots and lots of changes happened here !
After we made the first monster, we chose to make a v2. Why ? Because the old one had some design flaws we wanted to erase :
- First it was too human-like and boss-like.
- As it gave a sense of dread and uniqueness, it was a bit weird to see multiple copies of it.
- Considering the way it climbed, the position of the head and the structure of the body was facing the walls too much.
- We wanted more flexibility with it, especially with the tentacles. Because the old one was one whole mesh.
So we made a new one ! Without a head, with separated tentacles so that we can change them appart from the rest, and globally smaller.
Here's the result !
Here's the artist's Deviant Art's link for more illustrations : https://www.artstation.com/artwork/g0Z4Xx
With it came some procedural animations changes (and some tentacles tests we had to give up) :
This was scraped :
Here is the new enemy animated (you can see the body waving and tentacle wiggling) :
Game Feel and Audio
In terms of game feel we added :
- Screen shakes
- Controller vibrations
- Audio feedbacks for attacks, speed, grapple and monsters
- Speed visual effects
- Attack visual effects and shader
- All to emphasize the speed and impact of the attacks.
All this can be witnessed in the game loops records that come right now.
Game Loops record !
Old game loops record :
