Mimic Hunt is a 4 months Master 2 project made on Unreal Engine between October 2024 and January 2025 !
GAME CONCEPT
Mimic Hunt is a 4 players cooperative online FPS in which you hunt dangerous and deceiving creatures. It takes inspiration from other games like Lethal Company, Prop Hunt & Phasmophobia for mid to hard-core hunters seeking a high-quality, thrilling, and scary experience with funny social interactions.
The Mimic Hunters earn money by killing mimics, which are dangerous parasites that hide inside human belongings. The rule is simple :
ANYTHING CAN BE A MIMIC.

These monsters will hide, ambush and challenge you at all costs. In a team of up to four hunters, each member will be equipped with a gun and a tool. You must cooperate and strategize to achieve your mission and, hopefully, survive.
HEADQUARTERS
You start in the HQ, which serves as a HUB to join and invite friends using the lobby code. Pay attention to the environment, you might find some helpful advice. You can also choose from 3 tools at your disposal on the workbench :

Split the items, discuss tactics, and then enter the truck to start the hunt !
You can get a glimpse of a run below if you'd like, but skip this part if you want to keep the surprise.
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT & PLACEHOLDERS
Mimic Hunt is currently still in development, contains some placeholders, and is planned to be released on Steam during 2025 for free.

Install instructions
- Gather up to 3 friends
- Download .zip file and make sure you have the same version as your friends !
- Extract the files
- Plug in a headset and a microphone
- Double click the .exe
- Hunt Mimics together ;)

I played with my friend and we loved the game!
We barely could kill just one mimic XDD, we basically suck, but still it was fun. It's easy to be killed if you aren't careful and let mimic block you in the corner (5:04). I like the mechanic of mimics having weaker spots, but I think it would be more fun, if mimics wouldn't drop dead after running from you and just change into another object instead, because it is so hard to catch them. I think it's ok for them to be so fast, but the game would be better if they change appearance instead of dying. If it's already like this, you can explain it to me, because I felt like they disappear after running. I also think there should be more maps, maybe with mechanic of randomizing your surroundings, maybe even changing rooms layout.
I think there could be 1v1 mode or 2v2 (5:34), since fight mechanics are easy to figure out and are one of the best aspects of the game, also fighting animations are clean and smooth.
Mechanic of reviving teammates after they die would be great (1:03).
The models are great. I also liked posters and customizing our character.
We got crashed a couple of times (7:21). Also starting the game from the training section made the game so laggy (1:31), but starting it from the bus isn't laggy at all.

To answer a few of your questions :
- The mimics don't die when they run away, the depossess the current object and hide into another one. It might not be very clear, but it is the current behavior : when they run away, they try to get out of players' sight of view and transform into another object. They leave the remaining parts of the previous object on the gruond giving you a hint on what room they are currently in : the same room as the remainings on the ground.
- different maps : we would have loved to do that. In the sense that this project is just a demo not meant for commercial use, we sticked to one map and one layout, but it's definitly a good point to raise !
- We didn't and won't plan any 1v1 or 2v2 mode, as we really wanted this game to be cooperative and not competitive. But there would definitly be a great potential for PvPvE to this game :)

Hello ! I'm another member of the team and I'm also glad you liked our game, seeing you and your friend fighting and getting killed over and over was really fun !
To add some details:
- The door in the training area is actually a door to another version of the map, with more rooms and furnitures, but no optimization or polished visuals. During the development we had to reduce the size of the map, but didn't want all the level design work to be fully scrapped. It's playable if you lower all the graphical settings in the option and offers an even greater challenge. Sorry we forgot to add a warning.
- The game was balanced for 4 players, so the fact that you survived this long each time is already an accomplishment.
-For the crash at 7:21 would it be possible for you to send us the crash report ? It should be located in [User]\AppData\Local\MimicHunt\Saved\Crashes (you can open it directly by doing Windows + R and typing %localappdata%\MimicHunt\Saved\Crashes then enter) . Each folder is a different crash with files that will help us identify and fix the errors.

Hi, I've been playing with some friends, several times with 2, then 4, and we wanted to suggest a few ideas for the game, the game is great and amazing, well done students! but there are a few things to add (in our opinion).
Here's the list:
- Gadgets to heal/reanimate, or objects on the maps that can heal or reanimate a dead player.
- Or for the reanimation system, when you kill a monster, you can pick up a heart or other object to reanimate your ally.
- Adapt the difficulty to the number of players.
- A store or level system to buy better weapons (melee, etc...).
Hello and thanks for your feedbacks ! A lot of these ideas were actually discussed and/or planned but scrapped due to shifts in focus and/or lack of time. You can find remnants of the once considered healing feature as the healing spray model was hidden somewhere in the hub, as the graphics for it were already made when we scrapped the concept.
The CREATE LOBBY button does not work :'(
Hello, by not working do you mean that it does absolutely nothing or that it does launch a lobby but that your friends can't join
it does absolutely nothing
Do you get a warning or pop up from the Windows firewall ? CREATE LOBBY sends a requests to the Epic Games services and once it gets the answer, it teleports you in the newly created lobby. If the firewall is blocking the request, it may be the reason for the problem.
Are you on a Windows 10 or higher computer connected to the internet ?
Hello, I'm on WINDOWS 11 and no warnings or pop ups but I added the game in the firewall and nothing, even if Epic games is launched and Steam, nothing allows me to enter.
Ok I made it, I just need to open it in administrator mode 😂.
